Question Recreate 68 - part 2: time for a War Room

Now back to these provocatuers. Months later, an email was sent around that revealed that Stan and Delilah had been to several cities in the west of the country. In each of these cities the DAN chapter was torn asunder due to their interactions with the members.

Stan and Delilah had felony convictions against them. Several of the orginal members of the Denver Justice and Peace Committee that have talked with Truth Alliance hypothesized that being disruptive to the anti-globalization groups was a way for them to avoid jail and to be able to stay with their daughter. Who knows? It is interesting that they were such emotionally conflicted people, yet plenty smart enough to know how to manipulate others--especially angry, emotionally conflicted young people who had a need to do battle with authority figures (especially the police). The police often became the focus for a lot of rebellion and hatred. The issues seemed to take a back seat.

Never have Mark or Barb Cohen uttered a word that they might have been wrong about this association with Stan and Delilah. The rhetoric heard from the Recreate 68 people, the attraction of the young people to the charisma of Glen Spagnuolo, the focus on doing battle with the police and the confronting attitude--while losing sight of the issues, the revolutionary fervor, the attitude that groups like Code Pink, etc. just aren't radical enough, the peer pressure to be more radical, the disinclination to disavow violence with the pretext that they want to be "inclusive," --all this is deja vu. It happened in 2000 with DAN. It is happening again stroke for stroke, word for word.

Only this time, because of the scale of the DNC protests, there is the potential for massive chaos, massive arrests, detentions, serious injuries of idealistic but naive young people, and loss of legitimate messages from all groups.

It has been suggested at Truthaction it's time for a war room in the Denver progressive community come August. Keep an eye on police and organization provocateurs alike.

I'm confused.

You may remember sometime last fall Paula Gloria helped Nico Haupt produce a misguided web TV series called 911Stalker TV, that I blogged about at the time:

So it was only logical for me to assume when I started getting emails from someone calling themselves "the911stalker" that it was Nico up to his old tricks. I blocked them but they kept coming back like Freddie or Jason or whosit in those cheap horror flicks. After I blogged about it here, Nico stopped, presumably from embarrassment. Really, the whole thing looked like a pathetic attempt to get back his glory days as a disinfo operator.

Then someone emailed me about 911Stalker and asked me if I knew them. When I told them it was probably Nico, they disagreed and made a very good case for--wait for it--killtown and Jennifer(??!!), who are apparently harassing other people by email under this account.

I reported this to yahoo in case 911Stalker starts up again. Yahoo just got back to me today:

We too have witnessed the "no-plane" fringe group transform from an idle nuisance into a hostile danger. First let's take a look at the real 1968:

The Basics - The year 1968 marked many changes for the United States. It signaled the end of the Kennedy-Johnson presidencies, the end of the civil rights movement, and the beginning of the end of the war in Vietnam. More than that, it meant a change in public attitudes and beliefs.

More Detail - 1968 is recognized as being a pivotal year in United States and the world. On January 31st, Viet Cong opened the Tet Offensive by attacking major cities of South Vietnam, a move that triggered President Lyndon B. Johnson's call for peace negotiations. March 31st, L.B.J. surprised the nation by choosing not to run for reelection. On April 4th, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee, leading to riots in Washington, D.C. and other cities. In June, Robert F. Kennedy, former U.S. attorney general and U.S. senator from New York, was assassinated in Los Angeles while campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination. At Mexico City's Summer Olympic Games, African American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos won gold and bronze medals, then bowed their heads and raised clenched fists during the playing of the U.S. national anthem in protest of U.S. racism. In August, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago was marred by clashes between Vietnam War protesters and Mayor Daley's police force. And in November, Richard Nixon was elected President with running mate Spiro Agnew, making one of the most extraordinary political comebacks in U.S. history. These and other events marked the year as a benchmark of unrest, tumult, and change.

Taking a wild stab I'm guessing RECREATE68 wants to recreate the war protest bit:

The Riots

Outside the official convention proceedings, anti-war demonstrators clashed with 11,900 Chicago police, 7500 Army troops, 7500 Illinois National Guardsmen and 1000 Secret Service agents over 5 days.

The violence centered on two things: the Chicago police forcing protesters out of areas where they were not permitted to be; and protesters clashing with police, and their reinforcements, as they tried to march to the convention site.

The violence began Sunday August 25th. Anti-war leaders had tried to get permits from the city to sleep in Lincoln park and to demonstrate outside of the convention site. Those permit requests were denied, although the city did offer them a permit to protest miles away from the Amphitheater But the protesters were undeterred. When the park was officially closed, Chicago police bombed protesters with tear gas and moved in with billy-clubs to forcibly remove them from the park. Along with the many injuries to anti-war protesters, 17 reporters were attacked by police (including Hal Bruno, who was then a reporter for Newsweek and is now political director for ABC.) Throughout the convention, police would see the press as the enemy. Subsequent battles between police and protesters occurred nightly in Lincoln Park and Grant Park.

Also present that first night and throughout the convention were the famous Beat artists Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs and French poet Jean Genet. Most events and protests featured speeches from Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin.

The worst day of protesting was Wednesday, and was dubbed the "Battle of Michigan Avenue." Protesters were stopped in their march to the convention site and the media recorded graphic violence on the part of the Chicago police. Many innocent bystanders, reporters and doctors offering medical help were severely beaten by the police. Many hotels where the delegates were staying were affected by the riots. Fumes from the tear gas used by the police and "stink bombs" thrown by the protesters drifted into the buildings. (One of those affected was the Conrad Hilton, the headquarters for the Democratic party and the press.)

Another major clash occurred on the final day of the convention, when protesters tried once again to reach the convention center. They were twice turned away. A barricade was put up around the convention center to prevent anyone without credentials from entering the facility.

When the convention was finally over, the Chicago police reported 589 arrests had been made and 119 police and 100 protesters were injured. The riots, which were widely covered by the media, led to a government funded study to determine the cause of the violence. The study was led by Daniel Walker, a Democratic businessman from Illinois who would ran successfully for governor in Illinois in 1972. The study placed most of the blame on the Chicago police. Mayor Daley disagreed with the report and issued the Chicago police a pay raise.

Health officers? A bit broad there.

Today Nico emailed me--again.

My spam folder caught a lovely email from someone called "911Stalker". That gave the game away Nico, luv. 911 Stalker > 911Stalker TV--it really was dead obvious.


Nico linked to a pic about some bollox that was being messaged through Youtube. More "no planer" drama as far as I could tell.

Whatever. It's deleted and he's blocked--like all the other "no planes" wankers.

One would think, with the threat of eviction from his squat, Nico'd have better things to do than spam me--like get a new place to live.

Truth Squadding--Doing it Effectively

"Truth Squadding" for the uninitiated, is "Bird Dogging" in 911 activism. "Bird dogging" is a journalist term for an organized coordinated attempt to get a public figure on record about a position:

I. What is Bird-dogging?

Bird-dogging is a tactic that many organizations and concerned citizens, use to pressure candidates or elected representatives to take a public stance on an issue, or to question a stance that they have already taken. It usually consists of one or more bird-doggers who go to a public event where a candidate or elected representative, such as a Member of Congress or a U.S. Senator, will appear. The bird-doggers ask pointed questions about issues they care about in order to elicit a response and educate the media and voters. Because members of the media often attend these events, bird-dogging plays an important role in getting candidates’ positions “on record.” We all know that politicians don’t always keep their promises once they’re elected, so this is a vital part of holding them accountable to their constituents.

Bird-digging Basics:

I bird-dogged all four of the major presidential candidates during the 2000 primary in New Hampshire, a state where the level of access to such politicians is unbelievably high. With this experience in mind, I'd like to focus on a few basic approaches that will make bird-dogging a candidate easier.

The first step to bird-dogging is finding out where a politician is going to be. The more secure a candidate is, the less available they will be to the general public. Thus, in some cases, a little detective work will be necessary.

Here are some basic tips to address this problem:

1. Subscribe to a candidate's email list. Sometimes a politician will just announce where he/she is going to be.

2. Subscribe to state and party email lists. Both groups frequently promote their favorite candidates.

3. Get in with the local party -- get on their snail mail list and meet some of their leaders. You'll pick up a lot of info this way.

4. Find someone who's been active with the party for a long time who will be willing to pass on information to you. In some cases these individuals would love to bird-dog a candidate but can't because of appearances -- but they CAN pass info onto you so that you can do the "dirty work."

5. Find friendly members of the media to get info from. Some reporters really would like progressive issues to be part of the political debate.

6. Check other media sources such as newspapers and newspaper web sites. In some circumstances, the papers will have calendars announcing when political candidates will appear. This is far less likely in a non-election cycle year.

Besides finding out where the candidate is going to be, you also have to prep for the challenge. Whatever your interest is, don't assume that you can nail a politician with something you think up at the last minute. Come up with your best questions/challenges and present them to at least one person who should play the devil's advocate. You'll quickly discover that many questions that you once thought were great can be quickly sidetracked or outright dismissed by a savvy politician.

The actual logistics of attending a political event and bird-dogging a politician before, during or afterwards, takes a little bit of thought. However, once you get the hang of it it quickly becomes easy.

1. It's best to show up at an event early, particularly if the politician is popular, leading in the polls, or if it’s late in the primary season. You can't challenge them if you're not in their line of sight.

2. If there's a question and answer period your pre-planning will quickly become useful. A general rule is that most people don't raise their hands immediately. They need time to get their courage up or just become involved in the situation. Thus, as a bird-dogger, it's imperative that you express your interest in asking a question as quickly as you can. If you're not called on first you'll likely be called on second or third. If you wait ten minutes half the room will have their hands raised and you'll never get heard.

3. Take notes. Since bird-dogging can be a little nerve wracking it might be necessary to do these things in teams. One person challenges the politician, the other writes the response down. Remember, it's not only important that you get them on camera at that moment, it's also important that you be able to accurately quote them later on so that others can pick up where you ended. This is an integral part of effective bird-dogging politicians - make 'em responsible for their words and actions.

4.
Work in teams of two or more people and disperse. Since bird-dogging can make many people nervous, it’s best to go in teams of two or more people. One person asks the question while another writes down the response. Dispersing at the event will possibly allow everyone in the group to ask a question. Be prepared with follow-up questions in case someone asks the question you intended to use.

Bird-dogging isn't just about asking questions. It can also take other forms such as street theater, pranks, or even a simple protest. The important aspect is: Does it get a response from the politician or his/her staff? If it does, that's half the battle. The idea is to be creative. Maybe play good cop/bad cop, maybe agree with the candidate (rather, appear to agree) on a controversial issue in order to draw out a response that will be damming later on for the politician. Think creatively -- but do something that gets a response. Responses mean you can use the information later on and it means that the media will pay attention. It all results in helping create real change in our electoral politics, from the people running for office to the media reporting the stories to the cynical public which thinks none of it matters.

Bird-doggers also need to remember that anger does not pay. When you're going after a politician, especially one you don't like, you have to try to be at least cordial. It's part of the game. Butter 'em up a bit. Compliment them for something -- anything that you can think of that you might agree with them on. Hardly anyone is 100 percent opposite of where you stand politically. If it becomes necessary, step up the tone a bit, but only enough to become effective. Perhaps in some cases anger will get the response you want from a politcian or their staff. You should not do civil disobedience and outright loud protests unless you've reached a point of last resort with a particular politician. At that point the best you'll likely get is a media report on your actions, but real interactions with the candidate will be greatly reduced if not impossible.

Last but not least, pass your experiences on to others by submitting a report to birddogger.org! Your work won't be lost, it will become part of a long term record that other activists will then be able to use to more effectively challenge a given politician.

Some 911 activists have got it into their heads that "bird-dogging" is showing up and harassing a candidate by yelling like an incoherent mob. There is a time a time and place for yelling at public figures who deserve it, but it is not "bird-dogging".

One could do worse than follow the example of We Are Change UK, who do excellent "Truth Squadding".

This is a basic activist technique that produces powerful results. It's worth the time to get it right.

And being a national of some other country besides the States is not an excuse, chums--the ONLY loyalty that counts is loyalty to the USA.

Anyone pointing out that people like the president and vice president should have been impeached for trying to block an investigation into the 911 attacks, is just a whining commie liberal loser who can be ignored. In this great country (remember, even if you're from another country, it doesn't count. Only the USA can be a great country), when one has worked hard to accumulate wealth by strategically being born into the right family, whose connections allow you to become so powerful you're beyond the touch of the few laws not written by your corporate lobbyists--

When you've worked that hard, you've earned the right to be absolved of any responsibility for your actions.
